What is arthritis?
Arthritis, also called joint inflammation, is the swelling and tenderness of one or more joints. Joint pain and stiffness are the main symptoms of arthritis, and the condition typically worsens with age.
There are over 100 types of arthritis, but the most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
-
Osteoarthritis occurs when cartilage wears away, causing bone to rub against bone, which causes pain, swelling and stiffness.
-
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder in which the body's immune system attacks the joints, causing swelling and pain.
Arthritis physical therapy
Our care team at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center's Orthopedic and Spine Institute is committed to improving the joint function of our patients. Since each patient is different, there is no best treatment for everyone, and our experts create specific and individual plans for each patient.
Our physical therapists work with our patients to create specialized programs that bring together the best exercises to treat stiffness without further damaging joints. Our patients find physical therapy useful following an injury, surgery or joint replacement.
Arthritis treatments
Our Orthopedic and Spine Institute offers a wide range of surgical options to treat osteoarthritis, including:
-
Arthroscopic surgery—Trims damaged cartilage
-
Osteotomy—Changes the alignment of a bone to relieve stress
-
Arthrodesis—Surgically fuses bones
Total joint replacement surgery
For patients experiencing rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis or traumatic joint damage, total joint replacement surgery may be recommended. In this procedure, damaged or arthritic joints are replaced with a prosthesis (artificial part) designed to replicate the movement of a normal, healthy joint. Typically, patients undergoing joint replacement surgery are hospitalized for three to four days.
Our orthopedic surgeons offer the following joint replacement surgeries:
-
Ankle replacement
-
Elbow replacement
